I tried to upload an avatar and got the below error messages. The only way I could get an avatar into my profile was to FTP it to the avatar folder and select it from the list, but this isn\'t a good option for others who will be using the board, they would have to send to me to upload for them ... NOT.
Brand new installation v 1.0.3 stable, NO upgrade involved
INTERESTING UPDATE TO THIS - I tried to change permissions on the referenced folder (...fbfiles/avatars/...) from 755 to 777, but it won\'t let me change it. Same problem yesterday uploading templates and per my ISP, the problem is related to FB somehow changing server permissions to \"nobody\", thereby taking away my permission to change permissions :woohoo: So, of course I had him change the permissions back to me, but now FB seems to have again overruled us lowly humans and taken my permission from me yet again.

I already dropped to page 3 of the posts and haven\'t gotten any response. Is this really a problem that noone else is having or can help with?

I\'m having a similar error, and yes, I can\'t upload avatars as well.
When I try to use FTP to send anything up (including the FB 1.0.4 update!) My FTP client tells me that I don\'t have permission to do that. (Critical Transfer Error in FileZilla)
I can then use JoomlaExplorer in \'file\' mode to send things up one at a time, but geez... that\'s like pulling teeth. -And no, I never learned how to use Shell.
Turning off avatars altogether in the FB config panel didn\'t have a very nice result... When I do that and have a user go in to choose his avatar, the page that displays the gallery is displaying incorrectly now, with a broken table or something... Making the gallery images show off the screen, 2 feet over to the right!
When it\'s turned on, the page displays normally, but no avatars can be uploaded. I get the error:
An error occurred when uploading your Avatar. Please try again or notify your system administrator Your avatar has been uploaded....
But it hasn\'t.
And yes, the avatar folder is 755. I even used JoomlaExplorer to set it to 777, but still no better.
I would LOVE for someone to tell me what we\'re doing wrong here...
Thanks in advance!
Luke

This is the exact same problem that I\'m having as well, and as far as I can see, it\'s not a permission problem. Here\'s what I\'ve done to troubleshoot:
1) CHOWN\'d all files and directories under /fbfiles to www-data (the web user)
2) CHMOD\'d all files and directories under /fbfiles to 777
And the problem still persists. I\'m getting the exact same errors as are listed in the first post.
[code:1]Warning: imagejpeg() [function.imagejpeg]: Unable to open \'/var/www/vhosts/ndgmobile.com/httpdocs/images/fbfiles/avatars/63.jpg\' for writing in /var/www/vhosts/ndgmobile.com/httpdocs/components/com_fireboard/template/default/plugin/myprofile/myprofile_avatar_upload.php on line 466

So it looks like it\'s failing to copy the avatar file from the /tmp dir into the /fbfiles/avatars directory for some reason.
This is a fresh installation of fb1.0.4 on a fresh, clean installation of Joomla 1.5RC4 running in a Debian 4 environment.
This seems to be about the only problem I\'ve found so far using 1.0.4 of Joomla 1.5RC4. I did have the \'missing language file entries\' issue, but that was an easy fix. However, this little niggly problem, I can\'t get to go away.
Does anyone following the board have any suggestions (other than \'don\'t use Joomla 1.5 yet\'). This is a client install and they are insisting on Joomla 1.5. Surely there has to be a fix for this? It doesn\'t sound like it\'s something in the FB code... Especially after setting the /fbfiles to 777 recursively.
Thanks an advance to those who reply.

As an update to this, I also tried CHOWN\'ing the /fbfiles to the ftp user recursively as well. This didn\'t work, even when also set to 777.
And I also discovered that this error crops up again when trying to upload an image in a post as well.
Could this be something screwy with the way FB is trying to ftp images up?

If you\'re using 1.5 could this possibly have something to do with Joomlas FTP settings?

Thanks for the speedy reply.
I don\'t *think* so, but of course am not ruling that out. All other components and media managers in the Joomla 1.5RC4 install are working fine. I can upload images to the media manager, I can upload and install components (hense installing FB), etc.
It\'s only in FB that the image upload problem exists... and even so, with the /fbfiles dir CHMOD\'d to 777, it should pretty much let anything in shouldn\'t it?

I think you might find that when you CHMOD the FB folders to 777, it might APPEAR to change the permissions, but after you finish changing the permissions, re-check to see if it actually kept the new permissions settings.
It did NOT keep the permissions setting for me. My ISP told me that FB had switched the permissions ownership to \"nobody\", so he had to change ownership back to me so I could change permissions.
It appears that FB took away the ownership.
This stuff is a bit beyond me, thanks for any help or insight as it seems to be a problem for others as well

I\'m still using J! 1.0.13 and proud of it. 1.5 is WAY too full of bugs still. (Like that darn FTP layer!)
Right now I can use FILE mode of Com JoomlaExplorer to change permissions of a folder and all of the files in it manually. Then after that point I can use My ftp program to send up the files and overwrite the old ones, which I\'ve tested out to overwrite properly.
However, then I have to set the permissions back, and go search for the next folder that needs to be updated, then set those permissions, and every file inside it, then use my ftp prog again, etc...
It\'s a heck of a lot of work, and worse yet, I\'m worried that I don\'t have a clue which files I don\'t want to overwrite.
Can someone at least tell me which files in the FB 1.0.4 upgrade from 1.0.3 package I DONT want to replace on a live environment? Such as the Configuation file? I\'m really scared of losing time by having to go back to remake all the config-type settings that this package might overwrite.
