Search Fireboard v1.0.5 RC2 in Greek 9 Years, 1 Month ago
Hi Everyone.

I have installed Fireboard 1.0.5 RC2 on Joomla! 1.5.7, and I am trying to figure out how to make the embedded search engine of Fireboard detect Greek characters. I created several messages with Greek words (written in Greek) which display OK in the forum. However, the Fireboard search does not detect them at all. I get a zero result every time I try to search for Greek words in the Forum.

I checked my databases and their collation is utf8-unicode-ci. I also installed a search plugin that searches through the forum and, luckily, does identify Greek words. However, the plugin is invoked only via the site\'s search capacity (not the Fireboard\'s search field).

Do you know if there is a way to make the Fireboard search functionality detect Greek characters?

Thanks again in advance.

Hi!

Ευχαριστώ! Thanks for your reply. My Greek is a little limited unfortunately..I\'ll learn to speak it someday though..:). Are you suggesting I change the collation of the tables in my Joomla database relevant to Fireboard, to utf8-general-ci? If yes, then I already checked this and even though my database was created with the utf8-unicode-ci collation all the tables relevant to Fireboard are in utf8-general-ci. I\'ll try doing the reverse - change the collation of the tables from utf8-general-ci to utf8-unicode-ci and report the result here.

Has anyone ever succeeded in searching a Fireboard forum using Greek words as keywords from within the Fireboard search utility?

Thanks again very much.

I am using Joomla 1.5.7 and Fireboard v1.0.5 RC2 with utf8-general-ci.

You can see in the my website here
http://www.hagap.gr/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=73&func=view&catid=3&id=4&lang=en
if you like for search you can use certain Greek words from the forum. The result of Search is right, does not present problem.

To you I propose in your forum passing now a Greek text and making
search in this, provided that you have utf8-general-ci

Hi!

Thanks very much! I checked your forum and indeed the search functionality works fine.

I still have the problem, though. I checked the collation and it is indeed utf8-general-ci. Further, I queried the database (from within phpmyadmin) and it can identify correctly the Greek characters in it. However, the forum\'s search denies to work.

Could you please let me know which storage engine you use for the fb_messages table? Mine is the InnoDB.

Thanks again.

Hi!

Thanks very much again! I followed your advice: created a new thread in the forum with Greek characters in the subject and message area. I tried searching the forum for the Greek characters I had manually inserted and nothing came out. My collation is utf8-general-ci and the webpage is in utf8 encoding. The forum\'s search works fine with Latin characters. Somehow, it does not detect any Greek....Anyway...I am not sure what has happened here...However, if inspiration comes along please drop me a line.

Thanks

Hi again.

I think I located the source of the problem. I am not very sure but I\'ll report it anyhow.

I tried searching my Joomla! database via phpmyadmin and everything works fine. When I search the database via the MySQL console, nothing comes out. I guess that this might be a bug of my server configuration or so (I use WAMP server). When I manage to resolve this I\'ll post an answer.

Re:Search Fireboard v1.0.5 RC2 in Greek 9 Years, 1 Month ago
Hi everyone.

I think I solved the issue. Ok, this is what works for me and what I propose one could try in case the same problem is experienced:

Search for the file: fb_search.class.php (in my configuration this is located at: (my Joomla installation folder) \\ components \\ com_fireboard \\ sources \\ )

In there, find the line:

$searchword = $database->getEscaped(trim(strtolower($searchword)));

CHANGE THE ABOVE TO:

$searchword = $database->getEscaped(trim(mb_strtolower($searchword,\'UTF-8\' )));

or comment it out completely (if you don\'t want everything to be converted to lowercase).

The function strtolower is locale dependent and in case something has gone bad in the locale definition it won\'t work. In case you don\'t want to care about the locale, change the strtolower to the mb_strtolower which takes as argument the charset.

This works just fine for me.

Thanks again.
